With the development of the Raspberry Pi computer and certainly more to follow based on ARM processors, the reality of cheap, portable automation and DAQ systems is possible. I am imagining a system of a Raspberry Pi or Android board, a small touchscreen display and an Arduino or other I/O board. A complete system with the application and operating system on an SD card for $200.00! Embedded systems for machines, DAQ for anything. Affordable by students and inventors. I can see an 8 year old building a robot or a GPS tracker for his dog with this or me setting up an engine control unit for IC engine R&D without having to fight for a $5000 laptop running Windows and Labview.
